Question:

Will water ruin a live bullet?

I have a live bullet from one of my brother's rifles, and I want to make it "not live" anymore. If I put it in a bottle of water and leave it out of sight for a few months, will it die? I live in Adelaide Australia and there is a gun/ammunition store around the corner, would they take it? I just dont want it around...Thanks

  1. If you don't know how to pull the bullet from the cartridge case (and I'm not going to tell you for fear of liability) then you should probably give the round to the fire department or the police and let them know you found it and want to dispose of it properly.

Soaking it in water won't disable the round.

I think the fire department would be your best bet, but I would call their non-emergency number first and make sure they are cool with it.

    Good luck

  2. I agree with giving it back to your brother

He most likely has the education on firearm ammunition that you don't

But If I were just wanting to get rid of it I would simply dig a hole about a foot deep, drop it in and cover it up, if there wasn't a lake nearby

    And no

Water will not disable a modern cartridge

Way too much drama over one round of ammo

Gorilla Glue it to a wall and use it as a hat rack

    =========================

Lead is a naturally occurring element

One round is not going to upset the balance of nature

As any water fowler knows it is the widespread use of uncoated lead pellets that are fish edible size that have been blamed for lead poisoning in the waterways not single copper clad rifle rounds

  3. sure they'll take it off your hands if it worries you. you could always just throw it into a pond or river.

  4. They most likely will take it. If not wipe it off real good, don't touch, drop it in a ditch, call law enforcement and tell them you found it.

Better yet why not just give it back to your brother so he can shoot it.

  5. Hey dont listen to the 2nd guy.. dont throw it in a pond OR river.  It's got lead in it, and will contaminate the pond or river.  Any responsible waterfowl hunter know's to use steel shot over water....

At all the shooting ranges Ive been to.. they throw duds into OIL not water... Id suggest throwing it into some motor oil instead.
