  1. it has to happen

  2. I don't think so.  If I am Mayweather's manager, why would I risk?  I'm earning millions now fighting past prime Dela Hoya or blown up Hatton.  If he fights Cotto and he gets knocked out, it's the end of the world for him.

Typical major problem in boxing.  Fight are not what we want to see.  We should understand though that boxing is business.  Livelihood.  More than a sport.

  3. I believe that we will eventually see it, but not in the near future.  Floyd won't fight Cotto until HE is ready and he feels the moment is right for HIM.  He could care less about how the fans demand him to fight Cotto, or that Cotto has more momentum than any other welterweight at the moment.  He will only take a fight nowadays if the reward ($) GREATLY outweighs the risk because he is only interested in fights that pay in the millions at this stage of his career. Thats just the way Floyd works- I'm not saying he is afraid to fight Cotto because I think Floyd can beat him if they fought this year, but he knows that if he waits a while longer, the fight will be all that much bigger (financially and popularity-wise), and it will be all that much more winnable for him (Cotto will most likely be a bit worn out while Floyd will be preserved).

Floyd's next fight is going to be a rematch on September 20th with Oscar De La Hoya as long as Oscar gets by Steve Forbes on May 3rd.  That rules out the possibility of a Mayweather-Cotto fight this year.  Next year, Floyd will most likely face a rematch with Ricky Hatton in England, and since he will probably only fight once a year, that rules out a Mayweather-Cotto fight in 2009.  It could happen, but I doubt Floyd will fight twice a year.  By the time they actually fight, it will be 2010 and if Cotto is still unbeaten, then thats when I think that fight will occur.  Also take into consideration that while Floyd is fighting guys that he will most likely beat easily and who he has already beaten (Hatton, De La Hoya), Cotto will most likely be fighting dangerous opponents who will probably ware him out a bit in grueling fights (Margarito, Mosley rematch, etc.) and he will probably fight more than once a year.  Thats why after Floyd beat Hatton he said he was taking a 2 year "extended vacation" from fighting, but by getting offered a ton of money for fighting the same guys he already beat and will most likely beat again, it pretty much IS an extended vacation for him.  It all culminates to an eventual showdown down the road between Floyd and Cotto, and by the time the showdown occurs, it will be the opportune moment for Floyd to shine.

Edit: Joe S- You should know that Floyd will never take a fight unless he is going to get paid a substantial amount of money.  I know that he'll get money either way, but the fact of the matter is that he is always going to want MORE money, hence his nickname "Money Mayweather."  And the fight will definately not happen in late 2008 because Floyd is only going to fight the rematch with De La Hoya this year.

  4. why are you people talking about risking millions in floyd's case  either way he will make money win or loose. hes on tv talking real big that hes the best fighter ever which is complete bull**** and if he dodges cotto he will be remembered as someone who dodged a fighter. just Imagine if cotto beat floyd there would be a rematch and they would both see purses in that fight far greater than the previous fight which could eventually become a great trilogy and get the average person intrested in boxing and get rid of this MMA c**p we are seeing taking over a sport that has far more class and skill boxing needs this fight and fights like this only props i will give to the MMA the fights the fans want to see they happen. but I wouldnt be supprized to see this fight in late 2008 or early 2009

  5. They owe it to us the fans.  They should just make this happen without MONEY being an issue.

F boxing.  That is why I watch UFC.

  6. I hope so. That would certainly be worth watching and I think Mayweather owes it to the public to take the fight.

  7. I wouldn't bet on it happening, the odds are Floyd will never square off with any dangerous welterweight, least of all a guy as dangerous as Cotto.  The reward's of fighting an old slow DeLa Hoya or a smaller Hatton are simply to great to pass up.  Why risk millions in a fight he might lose when he gets more for less effort with the lesser fighters.

All of boxing would like to see Floyd in the ring with Cotto, but I don't believe for a minute Floyd will do it.

  8. they will. the thing is, cotto is not a household name like mayweather, when he becomes that, then we will have a megafight... 2009
