Question:

Will we have to go through immigration at Newark?

We're traveling from Stockholm ARN to EWR with SAS, arriving EWR terminal B, and will continue with Continental departing terminal C to San José, Costa Rica (SJO). On the return we will do the the opposite.

Will we have to go through immigrations/customs at EWR?

If not, how do we change terminals airside?

Thanks

  1. You will, of course, clear US Customs and Immigration at Terminal B in EWR.  Once you exit the customs hall with your luggage, stay to your left and follow the directions of the staff outside the hall...they will let you know where to drop your bags off for your connecting flight.  From there, you can either choose to walk from Terminal B to Terminal C (a 10-15 minute walk), or you can take the AirTrain from the upper level.  Either way, you will be required to pass through a security check point at terminal C.

A bit of useful info for you here...

IF you choose to purchase any liquids (like alcohol from the duty free onboard SAS), be sure you pack it back into your CHECKED luggage after you've cleared customs, and BEFORE you drop your luggage off at the recheck site at terminal B.  If you don't do this, your liquids will be taken from you as you clear the security check point at terminal C.

To answer the second part of your question, yes...a previous poster was correct.  You always clear US Customs and Immigration at your FIRST port of entry into the US.  In this case, you simply do everything you did on the way to Costa Rica, in reverse.

    Happy Trails!

there is a map of Newark Liberty Int'l Airport and it's terminals here.http://www.panynj.gov/CommutingTravel/ai...

  2. You have to go through immigration and customs at EWR.  You will then need to re-check your bags for the next leg of your flight.  You always have to clear customs and immigration on landing in the US from an international destination.

  3. yes
