Question:

Will we need the tv converter box?

We have Comcast cable and the digital boxes they supply for 2 of our tvs. But for three of them we just split the cable coming to the house and put them straight into those 3. We get around 60 channels on them. Will we need the tv converter boxes for those tvs to continue to work. My husband kind of saw the cable coming in as an antenna. Thanks.

  1. Cable is mandated by the FCC to keep broadcasting in analog until 2012.  There are a few exceptions.  For example, the cable company can choose to go all digital, but will then have to supply free converter boxes to those who have analog TVs.  It is only for over the air TVs that this affects, but it is not for every over the air TV.  TVs purchased within the last 2 years most likely are already digital and do not need a converter box.  If you already have digital, you most likely have a programming guide.  And you will get in sub channels like 11-1 and 11-2.

Next time you go to a relatives birthday party, see if anybody uses over the air TV.  If any of them do, make sure they all go to this link: https://www.dtv2009.gov/ApplyCoupon.aspx  This will give you $40 off a converter box by filling this out.

  2. You will be fine.  Cable is cable, it's not an antenna.  The changes that will take place next February affect antenna TV only.

I hope this helps.  Please return and select a Best Answer from all of those submitted.
