My friend and I are going to Italy in August, I know it's going to be VERY busy with other holiday makers - because of this should we carefully plan a route in advance, or will we be able to be spontanous and camp/stay wherever takes our fancy. We are driving around the Lake Garda, Lazio, Elba and Tuscany area. Any advice would be great, thank you.

  1. Hope you are very sportive and can run! It might be too late already... August might be a good season for big city's since the Italian "flee" but the rest will be almost fully booked.Don't take a chance on last minute (you might be lucky, doubt it but coming from far it's not a good idea)

  2. YES!  have reservations - all of Italy is on hols

  3. Yes. its definately worth booking accomodation in advance. If not before you go then at east while you are there and planning to visit somewhere ring ahead a couple of days to book somewhere. If you dont book before you go, then its probably worth seeing if at least you can get hold of a camping guide / list of campsites in areas you plan to visit with phone numbers etc then you can ring. Have fun.

  4. You will definitely need to book around the Lakes. It gets really congested there in August. Most of the campsites and hotels will probably be booked already, so you'd better start looking soon! Good luck. You'll have a lovely time - Italy is beautiful. If you have children, try Camping Butterfly at Garda - it's slightly 'Hi-di-Hi' but kids love it!

  5. The areas you are talking about will be extremely busy, the cities on the other hand will be empty. For Rome it's low season.
