Sounds like you got a SINGER! Its laminated for good reason. Find a method of clamping it together. DONT weld it. Maybe a lil epoxy?

Welding the edges will short the laminations together, completely goobering the ac characteristics. But it might still work for dc, but I have never heard of anybody welding laminated cores before. It defeats the whole purpose of the laminations.

You could use solid iron for DC. I narrow weld bead holing the laminations is not extremely unusual in a transformer, even when operation on AC as a transformer. For your DC electromagnet it will be no problem at all.
