  1. I would have to say that Wooden Coasters will not become extinct. In fact, Intamin has over the past couple of years developed a new "Laminated" track, that comes in pre-configured pieces for easier assembly.

Also, there are 5 new Woodies for 2008, there were 6 constructed in 2007, and 4 constructed in 2006.

Now granted they were greatly out numbered by steel. However, there are still 165 Woodies in the world as we speak.

  2. Basically they will be eliminated. It is probably going to be a novelty issue for those into the construction of them. So they will make more just for the purpose of proof that they built the largest wooden coaster ever and things of that nature.

  3. They already have done.

  4. We lost the Texas Cyclone because moving it to another location was impossible due to costs and zoning laws.  There are many, many people out there that not only miss Texas Cyclone dearly (myself included), but counted it as one of their favorites. There are those out there that STILL include the Cyclone in their top ten lists, even though it doesn't exist anymore. Check out this Astroworld fansite: www.sixflagshouston.com .

There are new woodies being built all of the time. If you live in the Houston area, you may have heard of the Boardwalk Bullet in Kemah, Texas. This is a new wooden coaster that just opened last year. If you havn't been, I strongly recommend that you go ride it; its my favorite in Texas!

Look these up-here are a couple of wooden coasters opening THIS year:  Ravine Flyer II at Waldameer in Pennslyvania, Evil Knievel at Six Flags St. Louis, and Flying Turns at Knoebels (Pennslyvania).

A couple comanies design  wooden coasters only: The Gravity Group: (Voyage, Hades, Boardwalk Bullet, Ravine Flyer II), Great Coasters International (or GCI), and some of their creations include Kentucky Rumbler (Beech Bend Park), Thunderhead (Dollywood), and  Roar (Six Flags America, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom). You can look these (or anything else you are curious about) on rcdb.com. Intamin (mostly known for steel coasters) has gotten in on the action with El Toro (Six Flags Great Adventure) and Balder (located at a park called Liseberg in Sweden). This is not a complete listing.

As you can see, wooden coasters are not a thing of the past, and there is a demand for them at parks all over the world, thank goodness! :)

The closing at Astroworld was unfortunate and shouldn't have happened. Unfortunately the property had to be cleared in a certain amount of time, and our Cyclone was lost. :(
