Question:

Will workshop floor support this mill?

I'm trying to decide how heavy a metal knee mill I can place on workshop floor. The mill I am considering weighs 2,400 pounds with a base measuring 2 X 3 feet. I can either bolt it to the floor or use adjustable machine mounts: http://www.royalprod.com/product.cfm?catID=10

The floor is 3,000 psi concrete with wire mesh reinforcement. It's 4 to 4 1/2 inches thick and was cured with water for three days. The soil under the slab is clay with some sand. While it's far from bedrock, it's compact.

  1. I have put a smaller knee mill (sort of a toy, about half the weight of yours) on wooden 5th story floor (though it was a heavy timber commercial building) and people do put grand pianos on light framing.

I wouldn't give a second thought to placing your mill on a concrete slab on grade.

Well, maybe if if it was a 2" slab of weak concrete over un-compacted fill I might give it a second thought, but not with your slab.

over the whole area of the base, the pressure is only about 3psi. about 1/10 the pressure in a car tire, would you worry about parking your car on the slab? Even if you put the thing on say, 4ea. 3inch diameter mounts, that is still  less than 100psi
