moving on, let us say you were President Truman [after roosvelt died,] will you drop an atomic in hiroshima during ww2?

Even Japan was close to defeat during ww2 and the war was about to end, will you still drop an atomic bomb keeping in mind that there are tens of thousands of civilians?

whats your opinion and why?

  1. japan gave up before pearl harbor or were going to but america said s***w that we got you by the tail and were not ending ww2

so when we did want to end it we just simply droped a nice present by our nice friends

yeah i would have totally done it

  2. The dropping of the bomb never should have happened, as Japan had tried to surrender prior to the bomb.  Their only condition was they be allowed to keep their emperor, and Truman refused saying "unconditional or nothing".  A real tragedy because after the dropping of the two bombs, the United States accepted their surrender with those terms.

They just wanted to test the bomb on people as they already knew what the bomb would do to buildings, and they also wanted to throw the fear into the Russians.

Jeff L : almost right friend, except backwards, Germany fell and surrendered May, 7, 1945 and Japan fell in August the same year.  The bomb had nothing to do with Germany's decision to surrender.

  3. nope.

hehe, already answered this, thanks for the best answer :]

  4. Knowing what I know now, yes, I would have dropped the bomb.  Primarily because it may have saved lives by avoiding an invasion of the main japanese island. But more importantly, it taught the world that the atomic bomb could not be used again because it was a terrible thing. Other situations could have just resulted in widespread use of the bomb, but this ended it.

  5. I would do it to save our mens lives which was why the bomb was dropped. Also because if we invaded Japan it could have provoked an even larger conflict.

  6. It's always hard to answer these questions after the fact.  Obviously we've seen the outcome of the events, Cold War, Nuclear Fears... However, if I try to put myself in the shoes of the time, the government spent all that time and money to develop that bomb.  They also knew that we were not the only one trying to do it.  Once we had the bomb we had to prove that it was capable of delivering the destruction that we promised.  Say we didn't drop the bomb and the war went on for a few more months or a few more years.  Germany could have easily developed the bomb and I am SURE they would have used it right away.  They had to do it in their minds and it worked.  Japan pulled out of the war, Germany fell not long after, and the U.S. Empire was born.  Let us not forget the fire bombing of Dresden Germany.  Thousands more people died in the U.S. led fire bombing in that city than in either Japan locations.  WW2 was not without it's destruction and nobody's hand were clean, but if I had to make those decisions I probably would have.
