Will you get unemployment if you took a voluntary lay off?

My job is laying off and has offered voluntary separations packages. Will I qualify for unemployment if I take it.

  1. I think you mean involuntary because your company is sold, out of business, bankrupt, etc.  You can collect unemployment which has nothing to do with your severance package.  You will still be unemployed because of no fault of your own.  I just did it, and it has been recently extended.  Now, I can tell why people don't want to work.  I make just as much if not more money staying home :o)


  2. Not for sure. I'd talk to the Unemployment office before I agreed. Could be intended to eliminate unemployment claims by making it a voluntary termination.

  3. Yes, you should, but you should call your state employment security office and ask them to be sure.
