Question:

Will you help me pray for the horses which are starving to death across our hungry America?

In my state alone, according to local TV news reports this morning on our ABC affiliate, many horses are starving to death as owners are no longer able to feed them during the current economic crisis. Trying to sell them to a good owner is as difficult as finding a buyer for your house. Some are said to only hours away from death.

  1. All of us on the horse site care about the horrible situation for these animals.  You may spend your time praying in the church of your choosing if you think it will help them...my experience is that it hasn't, and it won't.  What will help is money and shelters to house them.  My advice would be that you use your time and efforts to do something that actually has some modicum of chance at helping them.  Thank you for your concern.

  2. Don't just pray, DO something.

Horses are dying, and animal control hasn't stepped in WHY?

I'd be on my local animal control officer's ***, calling and reporting horses in my area.

You can't save all the horses, but maybe you could start a campaign to hook owners and horses up with a "sponsor" family, so that the sponsoring family contributes towards feed, vet and farrier bills, and they get to come out once a month and visit the horse they're sponsoring.  Maybe even ride a little.  Talk to your local feed store about publicizing it in the horse community, and what they think reaction would be.  Then contact those local TV stations, and ask them to do a "human" interest piece on your charity.  You might get more response than you think!

  3. Not to be a wet blanket here, but you can pray for someone else to help the horses, or you can do it yourself!  Ever hear the saying god helps those that help themselves? Apply that to your situation.  If there are starving horses in your area then start trying to organize a fund drive to get them food.  Donate time to a rescue organization.  If you actually help the situation, then nobody will need to pray over it.

  4. I appreciate your request.  It's apparent that some of the people "answering" you have not had the experience of having prayer answered, so I can't say I blame them for their cynicism and snyde responses.  I HAVE experienced miracles first hand.

Anyway, I pray for abused and neglected horses (and other animals) every morning.  And I have 8 friends who get together every week to pray, as well.  We believe that animals are incredibly precious gifts from God, and that we will be held accountable for how we treat them.  We also are active in finding adopters for horses who need homes, and several of us volunteer at horse and other animal rescue.  BTW, I currently own 2 rescue horses who were destined for slaughter due to behaviour problems.  (and we have a cat I found as a tiny kitten with a broken jaw in a parking, and a puppy who was emaciated and dying, also found abandoned in a parking lot).  So don't assume that praying precludes action.  It just precedes it.

It's pretty ignorant to suggest that people who pray just sit on their butts and do nothing else but pray. The fact that they do pray just indicates that they have seen first hand the power of prayer.

And, by the way, to the asker, your comment about "republican angst"  implying the tendency for republicans to deny the current economic hardships . . . .was uncalled for, and sadly illuminates your profound ignorance regarding the ethos of the republican party.  Stick to helping horses.

OK - no more ranting.  And yes, I do need a nap. . . .

  5. I already do and have been for a while.

  6. I'll TOTALLY halp you pray!! Anything for the horses...

  7. well i'll help you pray for the horses if you help me pray for all the starving and abused chidlren

  8. Thats so sad !!! I'll get everybody at my church to pray for

them. I hate that that happens to the poor horses ! Its a

shame. Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention.

    This is greatly appreciated.

  9. Yep, I already do. Every night I pray for all God's creatures and Peace on earth. It may not happen, but I know I am being heard. I have also helped with  a fair share of sick a starved animals. I am blessed with an over a abundance of pasture and horses are skinny and cheap at the sale barn, so why not? I much prefer animals to the company of people. I know there are those that say I should be putting my effort to helping other folks. I also think God made me the way I am for a reason. He loves all his creatures, none should be forgotten.

  10. I would rather pray for the owners of those horses that are struggling themselves.

That somehow the crunch of gas prices, food prices.. you name it would all be fixed in the blink of an eye, so that they would tend to the horses like they are wanting to.

Tough times are here, not just for horses, but humans as well.  This is going to be more and more common unfortunately... its just sad that they can't humanely put down the horses before it comes to that point.

TSK TSK.. who did Jesus come to save then??  If you want to go that route.. humans..

Next time don't ask if you don't want answers lol.  Or better yet, read your bible for the rest of the story ;)

  11. i will pray for people to stop breeding their fugly horses and adding to the problem of too many horses.

i will pray for people to use common sense when dealing with horses and do the best they can for the horses.

i will pray that slaughter houses come back with more humane ways of putting down a horse and using it to help feed the straving humans in this country(or help build the economy by having an export that we can tax and make money on to help ourselves).

but what will i do to help this problem? instead of sit back and do nothing?

i will educate myself and try to educate others on the topics of horse care and riding.

i will work towards saving money for my own farm/animal rescue when i am able to (ie i have enough money saved/have the proper training to handle abused animals)

i will volenteer my time to help animals in need any chance i get

i take in unwanted animals (cats dogs ect) and give them a caring home for a few months and then find them a new home or keep them until their lives are over.

i will call the cops if i see an animal in need/being neglicted by it's owners and until the cops get there i will try to help the animal while keeping myself and the animal as safe as possible until the people who are better trained then me can take over and save/help the animal.

i will never advise a first time owner to take on the challange of an abused horse, but i will suggest them to donate to their local animal rescue, even if it's a few dollars, a few dollars can help. if 100 people gave 2 dollars, that's 200 dollars, and enough money for one week of feed for a horse.(at least)

but will i sit on my behind and do nothing while others out there are adding to the problem? no.

edit: YOU asked, I answered, YOU didnt like my answer doesnt mean YOU should assume you know anything about me. *one day of mucking out stables says i'm more religious/care more then you do about these horses and add another day says i will do more for them then you will...you'll forget in a few days when the next horrible thing happens, i suggest that you take your anger for other peoples veiws back to the R&S section where you'll get more people who agree with your hate of others views*

have a better day then it started out for you, maybe an afternoon nap will make you feel better (it always makes me feel better)

  12. There is a family farm near here that "rehabilitates" horses. They just go get them and transport them to their place. I'm sure they decide what care they need with the help of horse vets. Perhaps they are retired vets? idk.

I drive by this place once a week or so and the horses I see seem to be getting along well.

Very few places like this place, I'm sure.

I have also noticed all farmers are working diligently to mow and bale and store hay this year. We've had good rain this Spring & Summer (it's pouring today, as a matter-of-fact)here, and all the farmers are focused on being prepared to feed their animals this coming Winter.

Last Winter, combined with this year's rising prices, has been a very dramatic "wake-up call."
