Question:

Will you join me and ask bookstores and publishers to save trees?

I have written to Barnes & Noble and Borders bookstores and asked them to persuade publishers to use post-consumer, recycled paper or alternative fiber (such as kenaf or hemp) to print their books on. I also asked if they could sell used books.

Do you think this is a good idea? I also plan to e-mail as many publishers as I can. What are your thoughts?

  1. Thanks for being proactive. We need more people like you who care.

  2. I planted a tree once, and I hug it every day.

  3. It would be a good idea only if the use of post-consumer recycled paper and alternative fibre improved the quality of the paper. Your heart is in the right place and I'm all for the sale or donation of used books. However, when I buy a book that I want to use, I want it to last, not to fall apart at a hard look. That requires paper made with long fibres. Recycling shortens the fibres. Recycled paper is fine for newsprint, paper towels, napkins, insulation, and toilet paper. It's a bad idea for books, except for cheap paperbacks of no possible value. Books worth keeping should last for centuries.

  4. This will not save trees, it will in fact decrease the number of trees planted.  This whole "recycle paper to save trees" nonsense has been discussed at length before.  I'm not going to waste my time repeating it again.

  5. No, because there are more trees now than 50 years ago!

  6. many magazines already publish on recycled or post consumer paper and many publishing houses support tree planting projects so I think they are already doing  a good job and there are lots of used book and magazine stores around to support but every little bit extra helps that much more

  7. It's good, infact it's great and sure I'll join you. Some of the publishers though may ignore your request but with a little support you may be able to do what you want to. And also, about e-mailing them, don't just do it once, send one in every ten days and also ask them to reply if they will honour your request or will not. And if noy, why. Good luck! I'm with you....

  8. Of course!! That's an awesome idea and I would love to help you! You're doing a great thing for the environment, so thanks! It would be really great if there were more people like you in this world... Thanks again!!!

Oh, and check this article out-

  9. I'm not sure, but I think recycled paper is a bit weak.

  10. yeah. why not.

it's worth a try, who knows, maybe publishers aren't snobs and will actually direct your call..

maybe some will even publish stuff to convince others to do the same..

    way to go!

    =)

  11. no

  12. Good idea, you can also save trees by encouraging people to either use the library and share books with others.  It's a way of reducing use and consumption, I know for the books I've bought after I've read them they just tend to sit on a shelf and collect dust.

  13. I think that's a great idea.  do you have email addresses for them?  Maybe sharing these with people might help motivate others to email too.

  14. When a 500 year old tree blows over on the ground, all it is good for is black ants.Dead and dying trees are everywhere in the forest these days. These dead trees are "mans" biggest wastes. Saving healthy trees I`m all for.  There is too much forest wastes now! The forest is  looking like a garbage dump of dead wood, But Maybe I could join you on saving healthy trees. National parks dead trees have already been removed and the forest looks nothing like national parks.
