Or do you just need a driver's license? Because I went this last August and all they asked for was a D.L. and some basic questions. Does anyone know if this is going to change?

  1. I believe an American doesn't even need a Visa to enter Mexico as a tourist. You will need an American passport to enter Mexico and enter back to the USA even by road next January.

It only takes 2 days to get a new American passport in the American embassy in Mexico City, but I've heard it takes about 1 month to get a US passport in the USA. Plan ahead before Janurary when several thousand americans will get their passports in the last minute. They only asked for my birth certificate and my old passport, I've always found the process to be really fast.

  2. YES.  The passport requirements kick in the first of January 2008

  3. Yes.  We just got ours.  Took about 3 weeks for them to process.

  4. Yes

  5. Supposedly the requirement that U.S. citizens must have  a passport to return from outside the U.S. will begin this Jan.

It was supposed to begin last Jan., but ICE did not have their act together and the government could not and has not been able to unclog the log jam for issuing passports.

You can get into Mexico, but you may have problems coming back.

  6. YES you will definatly need a passport

  7. march. 20,2006 i went to the mexican consulate to get a tourist visa, and they told me the next time i would need a pass port to go into mexico,  that was a year ago,  so i got one, and it did help, as of 1-8-08 you will need a pass port to enter into the U.S.A.??? or  just tell them you are an illegal or taliban?

  8. You got 5 WRONG answers.  Passports for LAND travel to and from Mexico will not be needed until after summer of 2008.  See webpage below and read the top half of the page for the CURRENT announcement.  it is best to have your certified birth certificate as well as you D.L.

  9. Although it is widely known that a passport will be required for land travel from Mexico to the US by January 1, 2008, it appears that Charlie is correct. See gov website. However, get the darned passport, its a second ID for bank regulations is you lose your debit card. It is also well known that our beloved US goverment doesn't know its *** from its elbow, and its difficult to believe anything we are told.
