ok so i am a girl ,who used to be in karate ,like when i was six years old. I moved to where i am actually now ,and like stopped with karate. So like i don't remember if I quited because i got bored ,or just because i didn't continue it.I really do want to learn how to defend my-self.And like I don't really care if it is some sort of spiritual ,that will even be good because i was about to take up yoga ,but i didn't like the place so i didn't but i have always wanted to like do relaxing and meditating stuff. I want a type of martial art that will really help defending my-self .Like one that if i got in some sort of fight ,or somebody grabs me in the street and bothers me ,I CAN count on my ability.I also want one that kindda stand out from the others because of being more entretaining and FUN!! ! !!!

I don't really want to quit again (if I ever really quited).I want to stay on it and know how to defend my-self REALLY WELL.

  1. this one has studied a wide variety of martial arts from moer than 43 years including Chinese, Japanese, Korean and European styles, some of which are very aggressive.

this one has fought professionally, worked a personal guard and has taught.

this one would recommend Aikido which is very effective as a means of self defense, has a spiritual aspect that is part of the entire art and is enjoyable to learn.

Yes, one does wear a judo gi until one reaches shidon or black belt level at which time the uniform changes to a lighter gi and a hakama.

Aikido is not an art that will be learned as quickly as some others might as one must learn it with ones body as much or more than with ones mind/thoughts.

    Be well.

one should practice the art of peace daily according to O'Sensei Morihei Ueshiba as such should be ones life and not simply a past time.

  2. I cannot think of any person who just woke up one day and said: “I want to start learning Wing Chun or Aikido”. Beginners find out about different styles and systems only when they join a club: in most cases they know about one single martial art and stick to it without knowing whether it’s the right art for them.  Due to these reasons many people end up practicing an art that is not particularly well suited to their body type, personality and personal interests.

Judo, Ju Jitsu and Aikido concentrate mostly on throwing techniques, and they can be a good choice if you have a short, sturdy and heavy physique.  These styles are meant to control an opponent’s attack rather then knock her down with strikes.

Tae kwon do is mostly based on kicks so it’s best-suited for you if you're tall, slender and flexible. This is preferable if you want to learn how to kick, aiming at your opponents’ upper part, above the belt, including the head.  If you're heavily muscled, you may find that your legs will not initially go as required but you should be ok as you did karate before.

For immediate no-nonsense self defence Wing Chun is also very good as it concentrates on skill and speed rather than strenght, that is a usually a weak point for a woman in a self defence situation.

In general you could try a variety of arts to find out which one you like best.  Also think about which aspect of the martial arts appeals to you the most.  I like kicking because I have always been fairly flexible, but other people might prefer punching because it’s a more immediate approach to fighting.  Of course, you should have skills in kicking, punching and grappling, and once you find an art that suits your needs, you should work on filling in the gaps that exist in your arsenal.  You need not be an expert in all ranges of fighting, but you should at least be proficient in them and know what is out there.

  3. Take Takewondo you can learn how to use Sticks and Nunchucks

  4. bjj for groundfighting, boxing for stand up (only really good in the ring tho not in the street) muay thai for stand up really good martial art. m a 16 year old female and im doing kiaoido ryu martial arts (a nz thing check the ebsite out its www.martialarts.co.nz) and i have just got my purple belt (over half way to black) i urge you to try something where it has a bit of everything so it doesnt matter. and yes with most martial arts u have to wear the uniform things (gi's) said gee's

  5. Take up Krav Maga, and combine it with Tai Chi Chuan.

    Don't forget to meditate.

    1)  First, just focus on breathing and relaxing.

    2)  When you have mastered the ability to relax, focus on a point on the wall.  It could be a picture, a symbol, preferably though, a dot, whatever color you want, but do not take your eyes of it.  Yes you can blink but don't take your eyes of it.

    3)  If you master steps 1 and 2, step 3 should be relatively easy; this step, involves emptying the mind of all thought, all imagery, and all sounds.  Let yourself be relaxed, empty, and focused.

    4)  With the exception of this mental exercise, the mind is empty. This exercise, once the mind is empty, involves visualizing yourself as shrinking, shrinking, shrinking, to the point where you are the size of an atom.  Emphasize "smallness," to cultivate a humble attitude.  The combination of disciplined focus, with a mental exercise designed to instill humility, will create self confidence without arrogance, and humility without being a doormat.

Combine that method of meditation, with any instruction you receive in Tai Chi Chuan and Krav Maga, in time, you should easily be able to defend yourself against most punks out there.

    Hope that helped.

  6. i too am a girl who did karate when i was young (although i stopped at age 8) :P..

two years ago I took up JuJitsu and I have never been happier!!

It has been SO much fun and I have learnt so much!!

It is somewhat spiritual and my particular school pays particular attention to the "art" part of martial arts - however I am now absolutely confident I would be able to defend myself from MOST attackers.. :)

Traditional JuJitsu is also not that common and it is what most martial arts originated from so you will learn a lot of different parts of a lot of different martial arts..

JuJitsu has completely changed my life..

For the first few weeks or months you will be able to wear your normal clothes (which most schools) but if you want to go to a higher rank you will have to wear a uniform (gi)..

I thought this was a bit lame at first, too, however by the end of my first month I was begging my parents to buy me a gi!!

In my opinion JuJitsu is the most practical and the best suited to girls..
