Will you please share your knowledge of th A.C.L.U.?

Question

My Uncle who is the wisest man I have ever known tells me the American Civil Liberties Union does not represent the values of the American people---he also states they will stand for anything wrong---evil or vile---even offer free legal assistance to NAMBLA

( National man boy love association) and other horrible causes.

My Uncle has never lied to be---not even once----but do you think he is right about them or could he be mistaken?

I'd say they're a bit too far left overall.

While their worst work often makes the news, I'm sure they have done some good things which simply have not gotten very much attention.

The aclu has no moral compass. they will fight both sides of any issue, irregardless what is at stake. They are liberal  if a town of 1000 people wanted a christmas tree in front of the town square and only 1 citizen complained they would take the side of that one at the detriment of the other 999. They are unmerciful and unscrupulous. Ironically the aclu started years ago in defending Helen Keller and the cause of the b lind which was a worthy lofty cause of justice and they have become what they are today a greedy egotistical narcissistic money machine.

He may not have lied to you, but he definitely has misinformed you. The ACLU certainly stands up for the values of the American people. They protect and defend our Constitutional rights, the rights that define this nation. When they defend the rights of groups such as NAMBLA or individuals such as Oliver North, they are not making any determination about what these people stand for. What they are saying is that every American is entitled to the same rights and freedoms as every other American. Protecting the rights to free speech of a distasteful or abhorrent group does not mean that you agree with what they have to say, just that you acknowledge that they have the right, in this country, to say it. Anyone who does not agree with that does not understand what makes this country great.

If by "anything wrong---evil or vile----" you mean standing up for civil liberties with regards to gun laws, religious tolerance laws, religious freedom laws, etc. then I suppose his opinion of "anything wrong" is what we're debating.

The ACLU stands up oru civil liberties in the face of a tyrannical majority.  This pisses people off for a multitude of reasons.  For every "nambla" case, I can give you a case where they fought to ensure a person could bring their bible to school or openly express their religion.

They offer assistance to everyone, NAMBLA is made of up of US citizens and thusly are under their scope.  They have never fought for NAMBLA's right to practice pedophelia or possess child-p**n....they ahve fought for their right to gather/organize though.  Which is a protected right.

Ever hear anyone say "if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear" well ask your uncle why he fears the ACLU if he has nothing to hide, as well as anyone else who categorically dismisses the ACLU as evil.

If nothing else in this life, please don't allow yourself to become blinded by accusations.  what I mean by this is to never let the horrid accusations of a crime affect the innocence of the accused.  Too many are way too quick to do this.

The ACLU tries to keep this from happening by having lawyers who do not focus on the accusations, they focus on the rights.  Every accused has rights, every oppressed has rights, every PERSON has rights.  You may not like what they're doing with those rights, but its their right regardless.  

This is a free nation and the moment we as a society allow ourselves to fall prey to heinous accusations rather than guilt, we'll all become more of an intolerant society.

Although I rarely agree with the ACLU, can you imagine which country would hang those who argue FOR IT? Counties like Iran, Saudi Arabia etc.
