  1. Is this the tradition?

  2. Yes.  I rarely have more than one 50W halogen bulb on at night anyway, but we'll use candles tomorrow.

Interesting that they didn't pick a weekday, when electrical usage is at its peak and businesses could take part.

'Earth Hour' to plunge millions into darkness

SYDNEY (AFP) - Twenty-six major cities around the world are expected to turn off the lights on major landmarks, plunging millions of people into darkness to raise awareness about global warming, organisers said.

'Earth Hour' founder Andy Ridley said 371 cities, towns or local governments from Australia to Canada and even Fiji had signed up for the 60-minute shutdown at 0900 GMT on March 29.

"There are definitely 26 (cities) that we think, if it all goes to plan, we are going to see a major event of lights going off," he told AFP.

Cities officially signed on include Chicago and San Francisco, Dublin, Manila, Bangkok, Copenhagen and Toronto, all of which will switch off lights on major landmarks and encourage businesses and homeowners to follow suit.

Ridley said it was also likely that other major European cities such as Rome and London, and the South Korean capital Seoul, although not officially taking part, would turn off lights on some attractions or landmarks.

  3. I wonder if your hospital will turn off its light

  4. Nope, in fact I think I'll change out my CFL's for good old real light bulbs and I'll use excessive amounts of charcoal lighter fluid on my BBQ.

  5. Only because I won't be home.

  6. Yes for ten minutes.

UPDATE: I LIED IM TURNIN THEM OFF FOR ONE HOUR!!!  EVRYONE SHOULD!!

3/29/08 UPDATE: I turned my lights off for 2 hours; unplugged the tv boxes, microwave, etc. etc.  Thank you for telling me about this....I spread the word as well.

  7. I think instead I'll buy all high watt incandescent bulbs and put them in every light socket in the house and flicker the lights for 2 hours, leave the refridgerator door open, turn my heat way up, my air way down, turn my microwave and oven on even though I'm not cooking anything, turn my shower on scalding hot to use up all my hot water, leave my computer run overnight, and then go to the bar while I leave my big screen tv on with nobody watching all in an effort to offset any good you really think you've accomplished when you actually aren't doing a d**n thing.

  8. What good will that do? I hate you tree hugging earth freaks

  9. No.   I'll turn them all on...

Along with the TV's and PC's, and crank the heat and open all the windows.

And I'll take a shower for the whole hour (or at least until all my hot water runs out!)

    It's gunna be fun!
