My boyfriend and I are thinking of moving to Australia to work. We will be aiming to get jobs before we leave the UK but want to travel for a couple of months before we arrive in Oz. We also want to have enough money to help us get by in Australia within the first month before we start work.

Will £3,000 be enough for all of this?

  1. depends how careful you are,it isn't alot of money when traveling

you must get a work permit or a working holiday visa before you head to Australia, you cant just rock up and expect to work

if you plan on living in Australia for a long time you will need to apply and qualify for immigration.this is not easy

  2. I'd save nearer to 6 thousand 3 is not much at all.

  3. we travelled around oz for 5-6 weeks and spent £3500, it was not as cheap as everyone had made out, we went via the far east on the way out singapore and thailand and that was dirt cheap,.

with oz, it depends on where you are staying, sydney ,cairns and perth we found the most expensive, brisbane (and south down to newcastle) we found really reasonable and then adelaide was dirt cheap!

we did not really eat out alot but our shopping bill was still quite high :

take with you these items that i found a rip off!!!

tampax (if you are female!!) $6 a box! ( take loads!!!)

shower gel 5$ for a cheapie brand

    razor blades 20$

shampoo 8$ for a cheapie brand

really tolietries were really expensive we found and not always great quality - so stock up on essentials

also decent chocolate was expensive and crappy - so not only did we save money by not buying it we lost weight! result

I would say that £500 per week is about right, just watch the dollar rate, at the moment it is 1.9 = £ so for a £1000 you would get 1900$ when we went we got our money at the right time 2.45 $ - £ so that meant that we got 2450$ for £1000!!!

oh on this point - banks are a total rip off in oz! they charge for everything! we found it best to change australian dollar travellers cheques in NAB banks that you will find everywhere and they changed them free of charge , so not only saving money but we carried them safetly as well.

when i was younger - i got a fab book called work your way around the world, from WHS (look on ebay 1st though!!) and that was a great help plannig our trips.

also with saving we took £5000 with us, and we sold loads of stuff on ebay to make money as well as our wages! look at car boot etc and sell on at a profit! really does work !

good luck and be safe xxxxx
