Willa B Awesome and Home Sweet Aspen dominate the races at Santa Anita Park on 28th and 29th January
The second start of the new season gifted the four-year-old chestnut filly, Home Sweet Aspen with a success in the Grade 1 Santa Monica Stakes on 29th
January at Santa Anita Park. The reason that the win is almost invaluable is because, Home Sweet Aspen, has never won a graded stakes before this.
Joel Rosario rode Home Sweet Aspen on the seven furlong dirt track that was for four year or older fillies and mares to participate on. She stayed prominent throughout the race, however, she did face some threat in the final furlong that was brought
on by Sugarinthemorning, who finished second with Rafael Bejarano onboard.
Third in line after the winner was Peter Eurton trained, She’s Cheeky, who was riding with J Talamo. The 2 to 1 favourite of the race, Rumor finished sixth on a field of seven.
On 1st January, 2012, Home Sweet Aspen was fourth in the Grade 1 La Brea Stakes at Santa Anita Park. From the three times that she has raced, she has won once, a lone second and finished fourth once.
The Grade 3 Santa Ysabel Stakes on 28th January too was raced on dirt over a distance of a mile and ½ furlong, was won by the three-year-old chestnut filly, Willa B Awesome, who is enjoying the attention due to the seasonal
debut win.
Riding with M Pedroza, Willa B Awesome, won the race by a lead of 3 ½ lengths. Finishing closest to the winner was Jerry Hollendorfer trained, Killer Graces, while third behind the winner was, Lady of Shamrock, who is trained by John Sadler.
Charm The Maker who was the evenings favourite could only finish second last on the track of five three-year-old fillies.
It was on 5th August 2011 that Willa B Awesome ended fourth in a Grade 3 Sorrento Stakes, and since then 28th January was the first time that the three-year-old got a chance of contesting in a Grade 3.
He won the Barretts Debutante Stakes on 18th September 2011, at Fairplex Park otherwise he remained winless throughout the season.
Both the horses competed at a different level with a different background experience for racing and faced competition that was not the same by any means.
