Willi Weber: Nico Hulkenberg’s nationality cost him a spot on the F1 grid in 2011 – Formula 1 news
According to Nico Hulkenberg’s manager Willi Weber, Nico did not secure a full season drive with one of the teams mainly because of the fact that since there are a lot of German drivers already on the F1 grid and the teams are trying their best not to sign
another German driver in the sport.
Currently, there are 5 German drivers currently on the Formula 1 grid namely Sebastian Vettel, Nico Rosberg, Michael Schumacher, Adrian Sutil and Timo Glock.
Since Robert Kubica will not be able to compete in the 2011 Formula 1 season after the tragic rally accident he went through, Lotus Renault GP will now have to find a good replacement for him and at first, it was believed that it was going to be either Vitantonio
Liuzzi or Nico Hulkenberg.
However, Renault’s boss Eric Boullier has recently stated that the team has short listed three drivers for the spot and they are Tonio Liuzzi, Bruno Senna and Nick Heidfeld. Weber claims that the teams do not want to choose a German driver.
Nick Heidfeld has not been able to prove that he has the ability to score consistently or even challenge the top running drivers since the past couple of years. He has been a part of Formula 1 since 2000 and still he has not been able to sign with any of
the top running teams.
Nico Hulkenberg on the other hand scored a pole position in his debut season in 2010 which Nick Heidfeld was able to score only once in his career after driving in the sport for 5 full seasons.
“Nico has all the right qualities but he had to share the stage with many other Germans. It's like a cake; if you have to share it with seven others, the piece you have is small,” Weber told the media.
Let’s hope that Renault sign the best possible driver for the 2011 Formula 1 season and perform up to their fans expectations in the upcoming season.
