William Buick optimistic about Fencing and The Fugue’s future after their stellar performances at Newmarket
William Buick, a retained jockey for trainer John Gosden thinks great things are to come for Gosden’s stable as the runners demonstrated their true potential at Newmarket in the Classics.
William Buick mounted Fencing, the chestnut colt, in the Group 1 Qipco 2,000 Guineas Stakes (204th Running) (British Champions Series) at Newmarket on 5th
May, 2012, and led him to a finish in sixth place.
The jockey was rather delighted with the performance of the young runner as he stated to the press that:
"I was very happy with Fencing. It was his first run of the year, I was pleased and it was a solid run on ground that wasn't ideal for him," he told the press.
"He didn't have a prep run and I think he'll come on a lot for it, and the step up to a mile and a quarter will suit him."
William Buick also rode the John Gosden trained, The Fugue. The three-year-old filly, owned by Lord Lloyd-Webber had a more successful run as the pair finished fourth in a line-up of seventeen runners in the Group 1 Qipco 1000 Guineas Stakes (British
Champions Series) (Fillies) at the same track on 6thMay, 2012, where she missed the victory by 11 lengths.
The renowned jockey stated the daughter of Dansili, out of mare, Twyla Tharp, did considerably well as the race was particularly rough and she was up against some of the toughest runners.
He was pleased with how she performed, and referred to her career maiden where she triumphed over the Mahmood Al Zarooni trained, Salacia, by 1 ½ lengths in the E B F "Makfi" Maiden Fillies' Stakes at Newmarket in October, 2011.
He stated that:
"She was inexperienced and she'd only had the one run under her belt. She finished the race very well and hopefully what happened to her is not too bad.”
The jockey has high hopes for both the runners and said that they have bigger victories in store for them. He appreciated Starscope’s run, who finished second in the Qipco 1,000.
