William Cheung beats Chetan Potu in semi-finals of 2013 USA Badminton Junior International
The young but talented shuttler William Cheung played with great precision and paved path to the final round of USA Badminton Junior International Trials on February 18, 2013.
He was up against Chetan Potu and this Boy’s Singles Under-19 semi-final match lasted for 39 minutes.
William laid foundation of his victory immediately in the first set and wrapped this showdown in just two games by registering winning figures of 21-15 and 22-20.
Though, Chetan also put an honest effort but luck was not on his side and he had to bid adieu to this international event.
In the opening game, both contenders put all in their possession to get early control over the game but neither of them could establish a permanent lead.
Initially, Chetan bagged few valuable points without any interruption and raised his chances of success but then the opposing shuttler put his expedition to halt.
William struck hard when it mattered and tipped the scale in his favour. He prevailed in couple of consecutive rallies and managed to finish first half of the set with a favourable score position.
After the mid-game break, he did not make any mistake and kept his competitor at the lower end. At first, he strengthened his grip by adding some valuable points in his total and then capitalised this lead in the final stage.
He bagged most of the ending points and wrapped this segment of the showdown with a respectable figure of 21-15.
However, it was not a smooth road to victory in the following game as Chetan put great resistance throughout this set.
He did not show any sign of bewilderment after the first set loss and played with great conviction. He challenged his rival in all areas of the game and stood toe-to-toe all the way to game point situation.
The first half of set ended with both contenders standing close on the points table. However, things got changed immediately after the interval as William ruled the court in couple of rallies.
He had to sweat hard to maintain that upper hand but finally he managed to put a decisive total of 22-20.
