William Douglass and Chris Larson on Goombay Smash win Melges 32 Worlds at Palma de Mallorca
The final day of Melges 32 Worlds championship hosted by Real Club Nautico De Palma finished in dramatic manner, as William Douglass and Chris Larson won the championship due to no race on the final day. The duo just got lucky, as weather conditions did
not allow any races on the ultimate day due to which, Goombay Smash was declared the champions of the event at Palma de Mallorca.
Douglass and Larson had a convincing sail on the penultimate day which brought them on top of the standings with 41 points. They could have been challenged by former leader board, John Kilroy and Vasco Vascotto, but as the weather conditions were not ideal
for any race to commence, the racing committee announced the existing results as the final standings.
The final day began with heavy rain until two o’clock which postponed the race and made the Melges 32 fleet wait for winds. However, even after the rain, there was no wind at all to have a sail. So, after a short trip to the race course, organisers cancelled
the race and declared the penultimate day results as final podium finish.
The overall standings of Melges 32 Worlds at the end of event are given below:
