William Gallas set for Spurs debut
Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp is set to hand William Gallas his debut for the club tomorrow in an English Premier League clash against West Bromwich Albion.
With both Michael Dawson and Jonathan Woodgate out of action through injury, the 33-year-old former Chelsea player looks set to play his first match for Spurs since arriving on a free transfer over the summer after he failed to agree terms on a new contract with Arsenal.
At a press conference today, Redknapp said that: “You don't play in teams that win championships, like he did at Chelsea, you don't play for your country as many times as he has — been there and done it all — unless you're a top player. He's got a bit of pace, he's a great defender, and he'll be a big asset. I think he'll be a great signing for us."
Gallas has been working his way back to match fitness after not having played any competitive football for a while. He played for 70 minutes as a Spurs XI beat Queens Park Rangers 3-1 in a closed-doors friendly match earlier this week.
Summer signings all train
The club’s four summer signings — Gallas, Holland international Rafael van der Vaart, Sandro Ranieri and Stipe Pletikosa — trained with the rest of the first-team squad for the first time yesterday and all of them are available to play a part in tomorrow’s game.
Gallas will be looking to make his mark for Spurs in both domestic and European competition. Spurs are currently sitting in 11th place in the league and will make their debut in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League when they take on Werder Bremen.
Spurs qualified for the elite European club competition for the first time after finishing fourth in the league last season and seeing off Swiss side Young Boys in a play-off tie.
