William Gallas set to remain Tottenham Hotspur captain
Defender William Gallas is set to remain captain of Tottenham Hotspur after guiding the team to a 3-2 win away to rivals Arsenal.
Gallas was made captain for the match by Spurs boss Harry Redknapp, which was a surprise to a lot of people. Gallas famously lost the captaincy when he was a player at Arsenal because he was too temperamental.
"William should be captain in all honesty.
Luka [Modric] is a quiet little guy. He just gets on with his own job.
I made Tom [Huddlestone] captain, he's been in great form. But he is a quiet boy.
William has captained teams before, so there is every chance we'll look at that [on a permanent basis]," Redknapp told Sky Sports.
Redknapp says the main reason he made Gallas captain for the Arsenal match is because he felt it would have a positive impact on Gallas' game. The thinking was that Gallas
would raise his performance levels because he felt he had a point to prove. Gallas was also subjected to verbal abuse during the match, which would have made him even more determined.
"I made him captain because he was coming back to Arsenal
and it was a good gesture. I thought he deserved that, the way he's played. He led by example; he responded well," added Redknapp.
Redknapp has also revealed that Gallas was almost expecting of the captaincy at some point during his time at the club. This suggests that Gallas expects to be leader of
the Spurs team and sees himself as a dominant and loud figure in the Tottenham side.
"When I gave him the armband, he just said, 'Good'. He doesn't say a lot;
he's a quiet guy off the pitch," he said.
Betting advice
Spurs is well placed in sixth in the Premier League table. The club has a lot of good things going on and is a solid bet to win Premier League games on a match by match basis.
A title challenge is probably a little bit too much of a big job for the rest of this season.
