William McGirt surges to share the halfway lead at the RBC Canadian Open
William McGirt cruised into a share of the lead midway through the second round of the RBC Canadian Open, as he reached the turn with a four-under par to move to 11-under for the tournament at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club.
McGirt, who is chasing his first PGA Tour, started his round standing at the second position. He then took advantage of the benign early morning conditions and moved one position up the leaderboard.
Thereafter, Scott Piercy also joined him on the top after adding a 67 to his opening round score of eight-under par 62.
The highlight of McGirt's performance includes a 49-foot birdie on the par-three eighth hole that turned his good day into a great day. According to him, his game off the tee was not good on day two compared to his performance in the opening round.
Moreover, neither was he that good with his putter, as he was on Thursday. Yet, he managed to record a decent score that took him on top of the leaderboard.
“Yesterday it seemed like I hit a lot of really good iron shots. I did hit a couple close today, but I wasn't quite as close yesterday, so it was a little tougher to make putts,” he said.
“But I did sneak it by them on 8 in the front of the green, so it was a bonus. All in all it was pretty solid. Hit a lot of fairways and greens, and fortunately I made some putts”.
He also stated that he does not want to change his game plan for the weekend and is happy with the way he is moving through the event.
“I still play the same game. Fairways and greens, and take advantage of the opportunities when you get them. I'm not going to sit there and try to change what I'm doing,” the 33-year-old American said.
Tim Clark, meanwhile, made a big leap towards the top of the leaderboard with six birdies and a stunning eagle, helping him to move to eight-under par after the second round and tying for the fifth place.
