William Tiller wins Asian Match Racing Championship to qualify for 2011 Monsoon Cup – Sailing news
After a successful run in the 2011 Asian Match Racing Championship at Kuala Terengganu in Malaysia, New Zealand’s William Tiller secured top spot in the standings and booked a place for the upcoming 2011 Monsoon Cup which is the final event of 2011 ISAF
World Match Racing Tour. Tiller, on his boat, Full Metal Jacket Racing, defeated Team Gilmour led by David Gilmour in the final competition.
The competitions in penultimate and final stage commenced at Kuala Terengganu on October 18, where Tiller raced against Chin Yew Seah of Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, who raced on Zoke Kiwi Match. The competition was easy for him, as he won both starts to
the Chinese to surge into the final match up against Gilmour.
On the other hand, Gilmour was up against experienced Reuben Corbett on AON Racing. Despite having less experience than Corbett on waters, Gilmour managed to take him down by 3-0 and set a clash with Tiller in the final.
Gilmour took the first race crossing the finish line 22 seconds before Tiller. However, Tiller sprang back into the race and in the next two races he took care of Gilmour’s lead and beat him 2-1 at the end.
Speaking to media at the end of the event, Tiller said, “David pushed us hard. We had a bad first race start but we came back in the next two. We felt we had a slight edge in the prestarts. The last race was close but we split him at the mark and that two
length lead allowed us to break clear.”
The Kiwi sailor added, “It's awesome to reach the World Tour, a good opportunity for us. I want to thank the Full Metal Jacket crew for a great regatta - Harry Thurston, Jono Spurdle, Shaun Mason, Daniel Pooley and Brad Farrand. The long term goal of the
team is to win the World match racing tour; we would like to achieve this by 2013.”
The overall results of Monsoon Cup qualifiers are given below:
1. William Tiller (Full Metal Jacket Racing)
2. David Gilmour (Team Gilmour)
3. Peter Nicholas (Freshie Racing Team)
4. Reuben Corbett (AON Racing)
