  1. william

  2. " I have read time and again that the officers (English, usually, to a man) "

The officers in Scottish regiments are Scottish, not English. They might have lived or been schooled in England but they are still Scottish. It is a requirement of the regiments.

At the time of William Wallace, the Picts were long gone and their descendants were the Scots.

  3. A modern Scot upset about Mel Gibson's inaccurate portrayal of William Wallace and medieval Scotland (not that he or she would want to take on Wallace)!

  4. oh many could possibly beat him in a match ...

but they will never take away his ...

  5. Wolverine.

  6. History is full of men who could beat him in single combat. The thing you need to remember about him is that the reason he is remembered is not so much for his fighting prowess but for his ability to unify and lead his men, and more importantly, for his ability to develop a good strategy and plan. He was especially adept at reading the terrain and luring the English into areas where the land itself acted to his benefit.

Did he fight well? Yes, he did, but not any more so than most famous warriors of the period. It was his strategy, his charisma, and most of all his committment to freedom which has kept his name alive.

    **EDIT**

And just one more thing. I took several classes on the history of what is now the UK when I was in college. Everyone, and I do mean everyone, was afraid of the Scots (they were called the Picts back then). The Romans feared them so much they built Hadrian's Wall and two other fortifications, as it was easier to just keep them away than it was to fight them. That fearsome warrior spirit in that group of people (the Scots), has persisted throughout history. It is interesting to note that as late as WWII, some of the most distinguished units on the Allied side were the Scottish Units of the British Army. I have read time and again that the officers (English, usually, to a man) all jockeyed for position and the opportunity to lead a Scottish unit simply because they were magnificent fighters: strong, brave, creative, and absolute wildmen on the field of battle.
