Williams Chief Operating Engineer Mark Gillan excited about Renault engine deal – Formula 1 news
Williams chief operations engineer Mark Gillan is very happy over the teams engine deal with Renault.
He said that the move is a step forward for the team and is sure to bring better results. Williams have been struggling for the past few seasons and have found themselves at the bottom of the table. It is a low point of a team which has won world titles
to come up with such listless performances.
The new car FW19 will be powered by the Renault engine and along with some other changes to the car Gillan believes it is going to make a strong impression in the 2012 season. Gillan though understand that the team cannot just go in and start winning but
has faith in the new car and knows that it is new start and will prove to be fruitful.
“The engine is just a lot more flexible,” Gillan said at last week's Barcelona test. “It's definitely a decent step. Working with Renault is very good; they are a very professional outfit. Both of us are still learning each other's processes, but things
are going well.”
“A lot of it is down to a more stable aerodynamic platform, because although they're slow aerodynamics are still important. Indeed, it's probably even more important in the slow speed because that's where the lap time is to be had. That plus the tractability
and flexibility of the engine through its range helps as well, it's a mixture of the two,” he said.
Gillan though did mention that there were a few issues with the car. He said that it was not performing to well in hot weather and the team has worked hard to do well.
Williams is now gearing up to focus on the performance of their car for the third and final pre-season test to be held at the same venue as the second in Barcelona. Bruno Senna and Pastor Maldonado have had a good run with the car and have give positive
feedback.
The season will begin with the Australian Grand Prix as the first race of the season on March 18, 2012.
