Williams’ Rubens Barrichello claims drivers seeking assurances to race in Bahrain – Formula 1 news
Williams’ driver Rubens Barrichello has said that most of the drivers are hoping to seek some safety assurances before heading on for the Bahrain Grand Prix which will take place on October 30, 2011.
The reason for the drivers seeking safety assurances is that the current political situation in Bahrain is very uncertain at the moment.
Most professionals including former International Automobile Federation (FIA) boss Max Mosley have criticised the FIA of making this decision as they believe that in Formula 1, safety comes first and that this decision is going to affect the image of the
sport drastically.
On the other hand, Formula 1 Teams Association has decided to hold a meeting to discuss this matter in Canada since some of the sponsors are concerned about this decision. Due to that, it is believed that the sponsors might not allow the teams to use their
logos on their respective cars’ liveries in order to avoid any negative advertising.
Nevertheless, Barrichello claims that the drivers are uneasy about the current situation and they are concerned about their safety in Bahrain.
“I would like to make it clear that I love the track and the event itself. Therefore, I want to be sure that we will be safe there. In the GPDA meetings, all of the drivers showed concern and demanded safety to race in Bahrain,” Barrichello told the media.
However, he added that the teams will have to work a lot as a result as well and since the Indian Grand Prix is now going to be rescheduled for a date in the second week of December probably, the teams will barely get any holidays before starting their work
for the upcoming season.
“Of course we will have more travelling and work. The teams will have much more work to do. But for us, the drivers, what really matters is safety. The rest is not important,” added the Williams driver.
Other than Rubens, Mercedes GP boss Ross Brawn also believes that this is unacceptable and that extending the 2011 Formula 1 season like this is just “wrong.”
