Williams Sisters conquer the Czechs to lift the Women’s Doubles crown – Wimbledon Championships 2012
American sisters, Serena and Venus Williams, conquered the Czech duo, Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka, in straight sets at the Wimbledon Championships 2012 on Saturday. They formulated a 7-5, 6-4 victory over the sixth seeds to capture their 13th
Grand Slam title at this prestigious grass court tournament held in London, England.
The William Sisters broke the jinx after displaying flawless performance at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. They cashed in the lone break chance in both sets to carve out the victory in one hour and 18 minutes for the fourth straight time against
the Czech junction.
While talking to the reporters, Venus Williams said:
"It's amazing. I was inspired by Serena's singles performance. It's wonderful to play on the court with her, and I couldn't have done it without her."
Serena Williams was quoted in a post-match press interview:
"Doubles is definitely more fun than singles," Serena said after the match. "At the same time, the last thing I want to do is let Venus down in doubles - in singles it's okay if I let myself down, but I don't want to let her down."
The ultra-fit Williams Sisters high-spiritedly entered the Centre Court and held their opening serve in the second game to level the scores at 1-1. They continued hitting powerful groundstrokes and swiped in their remaining serves without facing any real
challenge. The Americans capitalised on the lone break chance in the 11th game and clicked the opener by winning seven games to five.
Serena and Venus kept momentum flowing into the following set and quickly pocketed their entire serves without facing any breakpoint. They again capitalised on the only break opportunity in the fifth game and subsequently clinched the set with a 6-4 score
line.
The unseeded Americans smashed five ferocious aces and spilled fewer double faults. They clobbered a lower first serve share of 57 per cent as opposed to the seeds’ 74 per cent and superbly marked 31 out of 34 points on it. Serena and Venus also fired eight
winners and dominated throughout the match to earn the glory.
The veteran sisters were coming off after stunning the top seeds, Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond. They lost the opening set but made a fitting reply, carving out the victory with a breadstick. Serena and Venus also upset their 10th seeded compatriots,
Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears, with double breadsticks en route to the final showdown.
