Williams Sisters defeat Ignacik/Mladenovic in the second round – US Open 2012
Olympic gold medallist Americans, Serena Williams and Venus Williams, advanced to the third round of the US Open in New York, after disposing the Polish-French pair of Klaudia Jans-Ihnacik and Kristina Mladenovic, in straight
sets 6-4, 6-0, on Friday.
The Williams Sisters exhibited a superb game plan right from the start of the current season and successfully bagged the Grand Slam titles in double category at the Wimbledon Championships. They are displaying the similar
sort of blistering run at the Flushing Meadows and are the hot favourites for the doubles title.
Since the start of the Friday’s matchup, they held their initial serve and topped the score line with a 2-1 lead. However, the Polish- French tennis professionals proved to be tough challenge and squared the scores three
times in the set. The American veterans got hold of the critical break in the opening set and smashed a 6-4 score line.
The home favourite tandem responded their rivals with a reasonable first serve percentage of 62, converting 16 of 18 points on it. They maintained their win by securing even the single break point offered to them during the
set. In comparison, Ignacik and Mladenovic barely managed to attain a 47 percent first serve, with 10 of 14 first serve points in their pockets. The pair committed 12 unforced errors against the Americans at the critical instances in the opening set, resultantly
dropping the opener in despair.
The Ignacik and Mladenovic’s performance dropped down to a considerable level as they lost all hopes for victory. They could not hold their serve even in a single time in the entire second set and failed to bounce back against
their opponents serves. The Americans kept on consolidating their score line and progressed with a strong resolve to dominate the contest and eventually they carved out the closing set with a 6-0 win.
They had a below than average serve percentage of 42 and nailed down only three of the eight points on first serve. Like the opener, they had a high un-forced error score of nine. The American duo had an average first serve
accuracy of 65 and capitalized on nine of 11 points offered to them. They also managed to pocket away three of the five serve breaks in the closing set.
Serena and Venus will play the winner of the Falconi-Sanchez and the fourth seeded Kirlenko-Patrova in the third round of the Grand Slam doubles tournament.
