Williams Sisters defeat the Russians to advance to the gold medal match – London Olympics
US tennis titans, Serena Williams and Venus Williams, sustained their splendid run of form to book a berth in the final of the Great Games in London, England. The Williams sister have gusted into the doubles finals by defeating
the Russian duo of Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova by a straight set triumph of 7-5, 6-4, on the courts of the All England Club in Wimbledon on Saturday.
In a press conference after the match, Venus said, "We've put ourselves in a good position. We will try to go for it again tomorrow. It is amazing to do it with your sister. It means a lot to us. The Olympics is the epic,
the height of our careers."
The semi-final battle kicked off with successive serve holds in the initial seven games, with none of the pairs succeeding to break its rival. However, the Russian pair picked up momentum with time to hold up to the intensity
of the Sisters. They had to face smashing ground strokes by the Williams Sisters and were only able to hold off break point at their 4-5.
The American’s were consistent throughout the match, which daunted their Russian rivals until the end. Nonetheless, the Russians tried to combat every serve and introduced their own tactics, which gave them a tough competition.
The American duo maintained their dominance in the second set of the match by introducing tricky shot to the opponents, making it difficult for them to handle.
Serena in a post match press conference told the media, “I'm really just impressed that I'm doing well and playing well and I'm happy and I'm energized and I'm healthy, and I have so much room for more, and I want to do more.
And that makes me really, really excited.”
The American pair has conquered the tennis fields for the past two decades and now the Olympic 2012 might just be their last glory. However, they persistence is extraordinary beating all odds. They will surely prevail and
continue to bag home medals until their hungry dies.
The Williams Sisters are amongst the top contenders for the Olympic gold medal in the doubles category. Previously, the US champions hold the record of two gold medals ever since their start from the Sydney Olympics in 2000.
The two veterans have hardly faced any challenge this season and have glided their way through the finals. They will face the Czech pair of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka on Sunday.
