Williams Sisters look to defend their Olympics gold in 2012 – Tennis News
Fighting Sjogren’s syndrome, Venus Williams and her sister, former world number one, Serena Williams, are looking to make a strong comeback to the tennis courts and plan to defend their title at Olympics 2012. American sisters
are the reigning champions of Olympics gold medal and are fuming with confidence to set themselves up for yet another gold medal at London Olympics this summer.
They have won gold medals in Olympics on two different occasions, 2000 and 2008. They will look to repeat history and register a hat-trick of gold medals in this format of the game. Serena was questioned about their Olympics conquest,
next year, and she replied, “We’re the defending champion and we want to defend our title and I don’t see why we wouldn’t.”
She wants to resume her tennis as early as she can because she needs to have a lot of match practice just before the first Grand Slam title of the year, Australian Open starting from January 16th. Venus is still fighting
with her chronic disease of Sjogren’s syndrome and has delayed her comeback; she pulled out of ASB Classic event, in Auckland but claims that she will be ready for her campaign at the Grand Slam Down Under.
Serena Williams made her comeback in the Brisbane International last week but injured her ankle in the second round clash against Bojana Jovanovski to retire from the tournament. It will be interesting to see, if she can fully
recover and pull of her sublime form just before the start of the first Grand Slam, scheduled to be played from 16th of this month.
Talking about their preparation and planning about Olympics, Serena said, “This is a good preview to the Olympics, we both want to play. So this is a great, great time for us, so exciting.” Sydney has been a pretty good memorable
place for Venus as she managed clinches doubles as well as singles gold medal in 2000. It’s high time for Serena to step up and help herself with her maiden singles title at Olympics in 2012.
The only time American sisters weren’t able to defend their title was in 2004, when Venus was suffering from a severe injury and couldn’t participate in the tournament. Both sisters looked fit at their return exhibition match in
Colombia but seeing the condition of Venus and her decision to pull out of Auckland, rumours are again aired about her fitness at the start of new season.
