Williams Sisters to play against each other at exhibition event in South Africa – Tennis News
Serena Williams will face off her elder sister Venus at an exhibition event for the first time on South African soil in celebration of the inaugural Breaking the Mould initiative. The much awaited match between the veteran sisters, who captured gold medals
together at the London Olympics, will take place at Ellis Park Arena in Johannesburg on Sunday 4th November.
Both former world number one stars will square off each other for the first time since WTA Championships in Doha three years ago. They were both ruled out for almost a year due to injuries but Serena has recovered well and is back in the Top Three of the
WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings. Venus on the other side needed more time to recover. However, she has recently lifted her game and broke back into the Top 50.
The 31-year-old Serena is in spectacular run of form this circuit. She recently completed her Career Golden Grand Slam after slaughtering Sharapova with a bagel at the London Olympics. Serena let her spark lit at the Flushing Meadows and after crushing her
entire opponents, she captured her 15th Grand Slam title.
Serena went on a 17 match unbeaten run on clay courts this season. Regardless of crashing out from the opening round at the Roland Garros, she made a stunning reply at the Wimbledon Championships. The younger Williams cruised past her rivals before overpowering
third seeded Agnieszka Radwanska in the final showdown. She also conquered the Stanford WTA event (downed lucky loser Coco Vandeweghe in final).
Venus on the other hand has also grabbed a gold medal in the Olympics event in 2000. She recently secured a semi-final berth at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati and cracked the Top 50 rankings. Venus also cruised into the final eight at the Sony
Ericsson Open in Miami, Internazionali BNL D’Italia in Rome and Family Circle Cup in Charleston.
“After Serena’s gold medal at the Olympics, her win at Wimbledon and now the U.S. Open too, I look forward to taking my younger sister on in this exhibition tennis match in South Africa,” Venus commented in a press conference.
Both sisters will lock horns with each other for the 14th time with Serena leading the head-to-head series by 8-5 against Venus. Serena conquered the 32-year-old in her last four meetings three years ago. In their last battle against each other,
the younger Williams struck five aces and clobbered a better first serve share of 67 per cent as compared to her sister’s 50 per cent. She also impressively marked 35 out of 52 points on it and was never challenged with any breakpoint. Serena cashed two out
of six break chances and formulated a 6-2, 7-6(4) score line.
Serena is expected to formulate a 6-3, 6-2 victory against her sister as with her current run of form, no one can stand in her way.
