Williams’ can’t keep grand slam dream alive
Holders of all the current ladies Grand Slam doubles titles, the Williams sisters have crashed out of Wimbledon in the quarter-finals to Elena Vesnina and Vera Zvonareva 6-3 3-6 6-4.
Venus and Serena were looking to complete a season Grand Slam of double titles but that hope was dashed when they couldn’t overcome their Russian opponents. The defeat also brings an end to the Williams Slam which dates back to the French Open last year.
The sisters completed the Williams Slam at Roland Garros when they defeated Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik 6-2, 6-3 in the final to win their first doubles title on the clay since 1999.
Just a day after crashing out of the singles, Venus – the older of the two sisters – was unable to help her sister in securing a 13th Grand Slam doubles title and a fifth Wimbledon ladies double title.
Though the sisters hit 14 aces to the Russians four and 21 clean winners they were unable to establish their dominance as the Russian pair were too nimble in and around the net. And when you don’t give up any unforced errors in three sets, like Vesnina and Zvonareva, then you’ll be in good shape to beat your opponents no matter who they are.
It will now be on Serena to seek revenge in the singles against Zvonareva, the two are on course to meet in the final on Saturday if both women come through their semi-finals.
