Williams’ chief operating engineer Mark Gillan believes they will improve in future – Formula 1 news
Williams’ chief operating engineer Mark Gillan has said that Williams is targeting a top ten finish for the 2012 season after the team saw one of the worst seasons of their history.
Williams went through 2011 with a dismal performance as their drivers Pastor Maldonado and Rubens Barrichello could only manage to score 5 points in the season.
Williams finished 9th in the constructors’ championship and ended the season with a lot to ponder for the future. Since the team has made quite a few changes, the most important of them was to come up with a competitive car. Although it is still unknown
how different the latest edition of their car is going to be for the 2012 season but it is expected to fare better than the disastrous 2011 season.
Gillan expressed the Williams have set ambitious targets for the upcoming season but the restructuring of the team and the setup so far seem to be very encouraging. He said that the team is progressing in the right direction.
“Looking on the 2011 side we had a poor season,” Gillan said. “For 2012 we've got the target of qualifying constantly in the top ten, finishing in the top ten in terms of position and finishing in the points. I'm pretty confident. It's not going to be an
overnight change, it's a hard graft but initial signs look good and we're up for the challenge that's for sure.”
Their driver Pastor Maldonado also believes that it is going to be a tough year for the team as they try to move up the grid. The progress is going to be slow but the main thing is that the base has been laid down in a way that the future will hold better
results for the team.
Williams have announced Bruno Senna as their second driver to partner Maldonado which has been seen as a step backwards for the team by critics as they believe that Williams has chosen to go for two pay drivers for the 2012 season. Senna has been rumoured
to have brought in $40 million in sponsorship.
