Williams confirm a deal with PDVSA as expected
Williams replaced Nico Hulkenberg with Pastor Maldonado as their full time driver alongside Rubens Barrichello. It was believed that the team wanted to sign Pastor mainly because of the fact that the Venezuelan driver was bringing a major sponsor from Venezuela’s
state-owned oil company PDVSA as a part of his deal.
The team recently announced that they have signed a long-term sponsorship deal with PDVSA as expected and it seems that Williams have finally succeeded in solving their alleged financial problems.
Most of the critics and professionals criticized Williams for replacing Nico Hulkenberg even though he was a terrific driver. Nico was able to score a pole position at a dry Interlagos circuit in Brazil and managed to score a time that was almost a second
faster than the rest of the drivers.
It was an extremely impressive performance by the German driver and it is disappointing to see that he is currently team less. According to the current scenario of the sport, it seems that he won’t be able to find a drive with any team as a full season driver.
Nevertheless, the Venezuelan driver is not as bad as people say he is. Pastor Maldonado won the GP2 title recently and since he is going to drive alongside the most experienced driver in the sport Rubens Barrichello, he would definitely have the upper hand
over the rest of the newcomers in the sport.
The cars are expected to carry PDVSA’s livery in 2011 as well and the country’s president Hugo Chavez confirmed the deal in Caracas. Frank Williams also feels that the team needed this boost and it will make a huge difference to their competitiveness. He
is hoping for a good performance from the team unlike the 2010 season and it would be interesting to see how they perform in the 2011 Formula 1 season.
“They are a substantial partner and can make a meaningful difference to our fighting ability,” Williams said in a statement.
The Venezuelan Formula 1 fans are very excited about this development and they are confident that Pastor won’t let them down.
“Pastor will fly our flag this year and carry the hopes of an entire country in this new chapter of his career,” Julio Gonzalez, PDVSA’s head of corporate affairs added.
Team Williams was unable to give a promising performance in 2010 as they finished in 6th place in the constructors’ standings but it seems that they might surprise the spectators this year.
