Williams’ driver Pastor Maldonado hopes for a better showing in 2012 – Formula 1 news
Williams’ driver Pastor Maldonado hopes to achieve considerable improvement over his 2011 showing.
Maldonado joined Williams in 2010 after winning the GP2 title the same year. His first year in Formula 1 could not have been worse as the team struggled for pace and points. Maldonado was only able to secure a solitary point for his team.
His teammate Rubens Barrichello the most experienced driver in the history of the sport also had a torrid season and was being criticised for his lack of competitiveness. Although he maintained that he was the best driver Williams could ask for, it was obvious
that he was having trouble coping up with other cars on the grid.
Williams are speculated to make a strong comeback in the 2012 season and young Maldonado is banking on that turnaround to have a car that he can compete with on the grid. He said that he endured quite a lot during his debut season.
“I trust the team because it is impossible to be worse than this year,” Maldonado told Brazil's Totalrace. “I believe that was the worst position for a rookie, when nothing works, especially in the first year [as] you have to learn many things. Nevertheless,
I defended myself well, even against Rubens [Barrichello]. It certainly was a year of learning.”
“I'm sure we will improve we have worked really hard to grow as a team,” he added. I hope we have a better car, one that is more competitive so that we can always fight for points and higher positions.”
Williams are trying to change a few things to improve; they have gone with Mike Coughlan to lead the design of the 2012 car. Williams still have not decided on who will partner up with Maldonado.
Barrichello was initially thought to have lost his seat with Williams for the 2012 season but recent developments have drawn different speculations.
The Brazilian recently Tweeted, “waiting to hear the good news from Williams,” which might mean that he may yet retain his seat but nothing has been confirmed yet.
