Williams driver Rubens Barrichello expresses delight at first points in 2011 Formula 1 season
Williams’ Formula 1 driver Rubens Barrichello was happy with his first point scoring finish in the 2011 Formula 1 season.
After finishing ninth in the sixth Grand Prix of the season, Barrichello was happy with Williams’ performance but said that Pastor Maldonado’s crash in the closing stages of the race was a big setback.
Rubens stated, “I'm happy that I've broken my run of bad luck though, with six laps to go, I thought tenth was the best result we were going to achieve today. I ended up ninth, but not in the way I would have liked to as it was at the expense of my team-mate.”
The Brazilian added that Maldonado could have brought some useful points for the team but sadly, he crashed.
Monaco Grand Prix turned out well for the Williams team because right from the start of the race weekend, they looked strong.
In the qualifiers, Maldonado managed to get in the Q3 for the second time in the 2011 Formula 1 season which was in itself an achievement.
Then in the race, Maldonado quickly advanced to sixth position and due to the nature of the track and less overtaking areas, the Venezuelan held on to his position quite nicely. Just before the race was about to end, Maldonado had a crash with McLaren’s
Lewis Hamilton and could not finish his race.
Williams’ technical director Sam Michael also hailed the Venezuelan driver and said, “It was close to being a lot more but that is the nature of Monte Carlo. Pastor has driven outstandingly all weekend, so it is a shame that his race ended in the barriers.”
Nevertheless, Barrichello brought the first points for the Williams team and played his part of the senior driver in the team.
Williams’ are finally away in the 2011 midfield battle and it will be interesting to see how the developments work out when new designer, Mike Coughlan joins the team from next month.
The Formula 1 season will continue in Canada on June 12, 2011.
