Williams secure long-term deal with engine manufacturers Renault – Formula 1 news
It seems that 2011 is not going to be as disastrous as people thought it would be for Formula 1 team Williams as it has signed a long term deal with engine manufacturers Renault which is going to come in effect from 2012.
The team has had some great memories with Renault as they secured five constructors’ titles from 1992-1997 and starting from the 2012 Formula 1 season Williams will once again use Renault engines for its cars. The deal is expected to end in 2014 due to the introduction of V6 turbocharged engines.
“This reunites the F1 team with a leading car manufacturer and complements our new relationship with Jaguar. At the same time, we are grateful to Cosworth: they have been a fair and reliable partner both on and off the track for the past two years and we look forward to working with them across our business in the future,” said Sir Frank Williams.
Currently, there are four engine suppliers in the sport namely Renault, Cosworth, Mercedes and Ferrari. Renault is currently supplying engines for 2010 championship winners Red Bull Racing besides Lotus Renault GP and Team Lotus.
Williams on the other hand is currently using Cosworth engines and this year up until now has been disastrous for them as the start of the 2011 Formula 1 season was the worst one for the team in its history.
“Our previous relationship with Renault was one of the most successful in Williams' history but we will not allow ourselves to dwell too much on the past. We must look to the future and continue to re-build our on-track reputation, which I am hopeful that today's announcement will help us to do,” he added.
Nevertheless, the team is still hoping to improve its performance this year and perform at its best before the end of this season keeping in mind that their 2011 Formula 1 car is not as strong as the team expected it to be. At the upcoming British Grand Prix, the team is hoping for a good result as a result of some upgrades.
