Williams working hard to improve performance in upcoming races – Formula 1 news
Chief operations engineer Mark Gillan has said that they are working really hard to improve their performance in the approaching races after facing difficulties in 2012 Canadian Grand Prix held at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal on June 10.
Gillan said that they were positive for the qualifying after successful Friday practice of the Canadian GP. However, their pair of drivers, Pastor Maldonado and Bruno Senna, had accidents due to which their gearboxes were damaged as result of which they
could not secure competitive places in the grid.
Although, Maldonado and Bruno could only secure 13th and 17th place finishes after setting off from 22nd and 16th grid positions and remained unable to score even a single point in the race. Nonetheless, Gillan said that both the drivers strived at their
best in the race which is more important for the team.
In addition, he said that they have gathered some valuable information during the weekend in Canada which will definitely help in making the significant developments and the essential preparations for the upcoming races. Besides, he said that they are looking
forward to perform well in the season ahead while he said that one of their main concerns is to make improvements in the area of tyre management.
“We had decent high-fuel, long-run pace on Friday and Pastor was pretty quick in Saturday's morning session on lower fuel too, so we were confident going into qualifying. Both drivers pushed hard on their one-stop strategies, but we were ultimately not as
competitive as we have been recently, which made progress through pack not as easy as we would have hoped for. Nevertheless, we will spend a great effort dissecting data from weekend, especially effect that large changes in track temperature and track evolution
had on tyre performance, and how best in future to react accordingly,” he said.
The British team is currently standing at 7th place in the constructors’ rankings with 44 points. Additionally, they are 16 points ahead of Force India and 14 points behind their main rival Sauber-Ferrari. Over and above, they are trying at their best to
secure a competitive position in this year’s championship.
