Newcastle defender Mike Williamson feels that Newcastle need to develop a winning mentality if they wish to build on last year's Premier League success.
The centre-back is hopeful and confident that the club will be able to build on last season’s fifth place finish and is feeling positive about the future as Newcastle begin preparing for the rigours of competing on four fronts next season.
Williamson insisted that a lot of hard work is required by the club and the coaching staff. He believes that the team must work hard together in order to ‘breed’ a winning mentality ahead of the new season.
Newcastle United earned a place back in the English top flight in the 2010/2011 season, but the club suddenly started facing problems as owner Mike Ashley started cashing in on important players such as former captain Kevin Nolan and Joey Barton. Things
took a turn for the worse when manager http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chris-c9006 Hughton was sacked by the club.
This came as a surprise to many as the man was responsible for the team’s promotion back to the Premier League. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alan-c4244 Pardew was appointed as replacement manager and many did not see him capable of managing the team.
However, Pardew surprised everyone as he signed a number of players and changed the look of the squad. Newcastle defied expectations as they finished fifth and played some of the best football they’ve ever played.
Williamson is confident that the club can continue their fine form. He believes that a strong pre-season is important to get things rolling and for a strong team morale before the competitive season starts.
Speaking to the club’s official website, he said:
"It's been enjoyable. The training has been tough but we've had a bit of rest time too.”
"Our second game is tonight so hopefully we'll get a good run-out and the result as well.”
"It's about physically and mentally getting up to scratch, but everyone wants to get into the winning mentality - that's the way we work.”
"The gaffer wants us to breed that. We have to be looking to win every time we step out on the pitch, regardless of whether it's a friendly or a competitive fixture.”
The player talked about the Europa League and believes that it will help Newcastle United grow into a bigger and more competitive side in the coming years.
Newcastle United start their Premier League campaign at home as they play hosts to North London's Tottenham Hotspur.
