Newcastle United defender Mike Williamson was delighted with the team’s defensive display against Atromitos last night as the Magpies earned a hard fought victory over the Greek side.
Newcastle had to battle it out and narrowly edged over the Greek club after a long range effort from Haris Vuckic. The victory ensures Newcastle’s place in the group stages of this season’s Europa League tournament as European football returns to St. James’s
Park after almost 5 years.
The club went on to win in an aggregate score line of 2-1 and manager Alan Pardew was delighted with the team’s performance. There were a few nervy moments in the game, but Newcastle did their best to see it out and keep a clean sheet.
Defender Mike Williamson was delighted by the team’s defensive performance and discipline and hopes to see more of the same from the team.
The centre-back played in both legs and formed a solid partnership with captain Fabricio Coloccini in the second leg that proved to be decisive in the team’s progress to the group stages of the competition.
Speaking to the club’s official website, the player said:
"We're into the group stage now and we'll look forward to some more great ties. They made it hard but we came through it with a clean sheet, so happy days.”
"They've got some good players and they made it difficult. They've got some technical players and they caused problems but all the lads defended well.”
"And we could have had a few more goals, which would have made it a bit easier. But it's nice to have a clean sheet and we knew coming into the game that if we had a clean sheet, we'd go through."
Manager http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alan-c4244 Pardew, though delighted with the result, has been dealt an injury blow as defender Ryan Taylor was stretchered off with 11 minutes remaining in the game. The defender hurt his knee after falling awkwardly following an aerial challenge for the
ball.
Pardew revealed that he may be forced back into the transfer market following Taylor’s injury, which he believes will keep the player out for at least a month or two.
