Newcastle United defender, Mike Williamson is hopeful that his side will beat Liverpool in their Premier League match on Sunday, as they look to cement their place in front of the Reds.
The 28 year old admitted that the match against the Reds will be a stern test of his side’s character. However, he believes that the momentum is with the Magpies, having won back to back matches against West Bromwich Albion and Norwich City.
He said, "It will be tough but hopefully if we can apply ourselves like we did last weekend at West Brom, then it can be a good game.”
"We are carrying some momentum at the moment and have got a huge chance against Liverpool.”
Although the Tyneside team is in good form currently, they will be without the services of their skipper Fabricio Coloccini. The Argentine was ruled out for a month earlier after suffering a muscle tear in a league game against West Brom.
The experienced defender has played an important part in the Magpies surge this season. Prior to his injury, he only missed a single match for the Toon in the current season. Coloccini’s absence is likely to pave way for James Perch.
Despite losing the Argentine for the crucial fixture, Williamson believed that his side has the capability of beating the Merseyside team. He pointed out that the Magpies have got an appropriate depth in their squad and can cope with the setback of playing
without the veteran defender.
“The second half at West Brom showed that we have enough in the squad to cope without him while he is out.”
However, Williamson threw a word of caution towards his team and pointed out that the Reds have got some dangerous players in their dugout who can hurt the Magpies.
"http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 have the likes of [Luis] Suarez, Andy [Carroll], [Stewart] Downing and many others who can hurt you. They have some fantastic players.”
He urged his side to draw confidence from their recent wins and admitted that the victory against the Baggies was a morale booster for the Magpies, after suffering a difficult couple of months in the league.
The Englishman also mentioned that there is a lot of ‘buzz’ at Tyneside surrounding the match and described his side as a ‘hard working bunch of lads’. He specifically heaped praise on the right back James Perch and termed him the best player in his team,
at the moment.
A win for Newcastle on Sunday will stretch their lead to 11 points over Liverpool. At the moment, the Magpies are placed 6th in the Premier league and remain in contention for a top four finish.
