Willian Cardoso and Mason Ho clinch victory in Round 2 at Reef Hawaiian Pro
Brazil’s Willian Cardoso and Hawaii’s Mason Ho secured their place in the third round (Round of 64) at the Reef Hawaiian Pro, the first of three events on the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, after walking away with the win from their respective Round 2 (Round
of 96) heats that went down at the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii on Friday, November 16, 2012.
Hawaii’s Kekoa Bacalso finished second during the 11th heat to accompany Cardoso into the third round, while Australia’s Garrett Parkes and Brazil’s Thiago Camarao finished in third and fourth place respectively, which resulted in their premature
ejection from the contention for the event title.
The 12th heat saw Ho take the win, while Brazil’s Alex Ribeiro finished in second place. Both the surfers consequently advanced to the next round. New Zealand’s Billy Stairmand and Australia’s Mitchel Coleborn finished in third and fourth place
respectively, removing them from the race for the event title.
The attractive winning prize purse of $250,000 and coveted Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) ranking points on offer at the Reef Hawaiian Pro were proving to be an excellent source of motivation for the surfers to push themselves beyond limits while
battling the wild waves and stiff competition.
Cardoso took the challenge head-on during the 11 heat, which pitted him against Bacalso, Parkes and Camarao in a four-man battle.
The Brazilian surfer scored a 7.33 off his first business-wave and went on to add an additional 6.00 points to his account, thus finishing with a heat-total of 13.33 points. The score remained unbeatable until the end to see him through into the next round.
Bacalso also managed to make the Round 3 cut after finishing with a heat-total of 11.83 points, which included a 6.50 and 5.33-point ride.
Parkes finished with a heat-total of 8.80 points, while Camarao registered a heat-total of 3.76 points, thus getting eliminated from the competition.
The next heat saw Ho walk away with the win after putting on an impressive performance to down Ribeiro, Stairmand and Coleborn.
The local surfer made full use of his knowledge of the waves to get his hands on the best waves during the heat and consequently earning an 8.50 and 5.83 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 14.33 points.
Ribeiro survived the battle as well after finishing in second place with a heat-total of 12.33 points, which included a 7.33 and 5.00-point wave.
A heat-total of 9.83 points by Stairmand and 9.77 points by Coleborn resulted in their elimination from the competition.
