Willian Cardoso and Matt Wilkinson prevail in Round 1 of Mr. Price Pro Ballito
The 19th and 20th heat of Mr. Price Pro Ballito’s Round of 96 (Round 1) kept the surfing action going at Surfers Beach in Ballito, South Arica, on Tuesday, July 5th.
Brazil’s Willian Cardoso outperformed his countrymen Jano Belo and Ricardo Santos along with South Africa’s Travis Logie in the 17th heat to clinch victory and go through to the next round. Belo also extended her
life in the competition by securing second position. However, Santos and Logie were eliminated after finishing in third and fourth positions respectively.
In heat 20, Australia’s Matt Wilkinson walked away with top honours, while South Africa’s David Van Zyl took runner-up place to advance to the next round. Fellow South African, Steven Sawyer, was eliminated from the event-title contention after finishing
in third place, along with America’s Nathaniel Curran who finished fourth.
The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World No. 32, Cardoso, got down to business right from the word go during the 19th heat. Opening his account with 5.83 points, earned on his very first wave, he got ahead of his
rivals on the scoreboard. Later in the heat, he added another 6.93 points to his account to finish with a heat-total of 12.76 points, which proved sufficient for him to secure victory.
Belo was unable to stay at par with his compatriot’s performance, but he still managed to comfortably outperform the other two surfers in the four-way battle. Scoring 4.67 off his first wave and 5.67 off his second, he finished with a two-wave total
of 10.34 points to follow Cardoso into the next round.
Neither Santos nor Logie were able to come up with decent performances, finishing with a heat-total of 6.50 and 6.30 respectively. The shaky effort forced them out of the event-title race.
Wilkinson, currently ASP World No. 16, showed good form during heat 20, consequently securing top position. He caught a wave early in the heat to score 6.17 points off it and soon added an impressive 7.60 points to his account to finish with a heat-total
of 13.77 points. The score proved too much for his rivals to beat.
Jonathan Gonzalez of Canary Islands was unable to make it to the latest ASP Prime event after his flight got cancelled in Tahiti, which allowed Zyl to take his place in the competition. Not one to let the opportunity go to waste, the South African
put up a determined performance to collect a 6.90 and 3.53 off his two best waves and secure second position, advancing to the next round as a result.
Sawyer had to settle for third position after finishing with a two-wave total of 8.10 points, while Curran’s disappointing performance during the heat earned him a heat-total of 3.47 points and placed him in last. Both the surfers were eliminated from
the competition.
