Willian Cardoso and Tiago Pires remain solid in quarter-finals at Islas Canarias Santa Pro
Brazil’s Willian Cardoso and Portugal’s Tiago Pires were able to successfully head into semi-finals at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Islas Canarias Santa Pro after emerging triumphant in their respective quarter-finals that went down
at San Juan in Lanzarote, Canary Islands, on Friday, October 26, 2012.
Cardoso got the better of South Africa’s Beyrick De Vries in the third quarter-final to earn his place among the semi-finalists, eliminating his competitor from the event in the process.
The fourth quarter-final saw Pires barely edge past France’s Marc Lacomare in the final minutes of the battle to advance into the semi-finals, bringing the competition to a premature end for his rival.
The final day of the ASP 6-Star event was turning out to be a real test for the surfers, sending shifting two-to-three foot waves in their direction. It was proving to be a real challenge for the surfers to lock these waves and make the most effective use
of them instead of letting them go to waste.
After exhibiting an impressive form over the last few days, Cardoso continued to express himself with a strong performance during his man-on-man third quarter-final, which pitted him against De Vries.
The Brazilian surfer went to work early in the heat and locked his first business-wave to successfully post a 7.33 on the score-board.
Adding an 8.00 to his account in the later stages of the battle, Cardoso finished with a heat-total of 15.33 points.
De Vries seemed completely out of rhythm during the fight for the  semi-final spot and only managed to get to a heat-total of 7.27 points after earning a mere 0.50 and 6.77 off his best-two waves.
As a result, he was forced to pack his bags, whereas his rival progressed into the next stage of the competition.
The fourth quarter-final turned out to be a real nail-biting affair, with both Pires and Lacomare fighting tooth-and-nail during the course of the battle to try and get their hands on the win.
The Portuguese surfer earned a 6.00 off his first business-wave, but was unable to hold on to the lead as Lacomare registered a 6.67 on the score-board.
The French surfer added another score in the six-point range to his account, which took him to a heat-total of 13.54 points.
Trailing behind his rival until the final few minutes, Pires eventually managed to move ahead of him through an 8.17-point ride, which brought him to a two-wave total of 14.17 points, thus sealing the fate of the battle in his favour.
