Willie Casey-Jason Booth to collide for vacant WBO intercontinental divisional title – Boxing news
Willie Casey, the former EBU (European) super bantamweight champion, will collide with yet another heavily experienced pugilist Jason Booth, the former Commonwealth (British Empire) and BBBC British super bantamweight champion, in a 12-round bout which will
be held on July 15, 2012.
The bout will headline the pay-per-view and will have the vacant WBO intercontinental super bantamweight title up for grabs. The event is being organised and promoted by Phil Jeffries and will be televised live from Stadium of Light (Sunderland FC) in Sunderland,
Tyne and Wear, United Kingdom.
The bout will also have Peter Cope take on Gavin Reid in a 10-round bout for the vacant BBBC Northern Area featherweight title, co-headlining the pay-per-view. Willie, 30, will enter his career’s 16th bout.
The Irish brawler boasts 13 wins with nine coming via knockout. Also known as the ‘Big Bang’, Willie recently shared his thoughts about the bout in a pre-bout press conference. Casey, basically a southpaw is coming off a majority decision loss to Andreas
Evensen, losing the chance to grab the vacant WBA International featherweight title.
Despite the dismal loss, Casey is excited at colliding with one of the best names in the division and above all a veteran Jason Booth. While putting forth his thoughts, Willie stated, “I’m excited that this fight is happening, training’s going well and I
just can’t wait for it now.”
When asked as to what he thinks about his British opponent, Willie commented, “Jason’s very experienced and he’s very relaxed when he’s in the ring. I’m hoping that he brings that hunger and desire for wanting to get back to the top again because if he does
then it’s going to make for a great fight.”
Casey vowed that he will try his utmost to collect this win commenting, “I’d never take Jason lightly, he’s boxed in the big league and it would be very easy to be picked off for twelve rounds. It’s a fight I’m not prepared to lose and I’ll do whatever it
takes to get this win under my belt.”
Jason, 34, has been in a total of 45 bouts, boasting 36 wins with just 15 coming via knockout. Booth is not well known for being a powerful pounder but is famous for possessing a tough chin.
At the moment, the Brit is coming off a pretty humiliating unanimous decision loss to rookie undefeated Kid Galahad. Jason should take this opportunity in order to make a comeback on the win track as his retirement time is nearing day by day and he should
collect some decent wins in order to leave the sport on a winning note.
