Willie Nelson nails undefeated Yudel Jhonson in a non-title bout – Boxing News
Willie Nelson, the surging American brawler, startled the whole boxing world and collected an impressive unanimous decision win over undefeated Yudel Jhonson, former WBC FECARBOX light middleweight champion, in a 10-round bout held on Friday May 11, 2012.
Willie used his height and therefore the reach advantage optimally and put forth the boxing fans an impressive showdown. The ring for the bout was set up at Texas Station Casino situated in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States and the show was televised live
from Showtime’s ShoBox: The New Generation weekly boxing show.
The above duo headlined the Friday night extravaganza whereas the eight-round non-title bout between Badou Jack and Alexander Brand co-headlined the pay-per-view. Willie, 25, was not the fan-favourite in fact he did not had much odds in his favour since
he possessed only one or two technical upper hands over his Cuban opponent Yudel.
Nelson was entering in his 20th career bout and boasted 17 wins with just 11 by knockout. The young American proud was coming from a second round technical knockout win over Brad Jackson and before that faced a majority decision loss to Vincent Arroyo.
His opponent, Yudel, on the other hand, was on an undefeated win streak and boasted 12 wins in a total 12 bouts. In addition, he possessed far decent knockout ability since he has nailed eight of his total opponents by knocking their senses out.
Willie possessed only the height and experience advantage and both these facets together aided him a lot during the bout. It was Neslon who started things off and connected powerful jabs to Yudel’s body while keeping himself at a considerable distance out
of Jhonson’s range.
Things started to get heated up as in the second round Yudel rattled Willie with a huge jab but the former did not lose his grip and counter attacked Jhonson eventually flattening him on the ring floor.
The southpaw Yudel stood up and started to eyeball Willie. In the fourth round, Yudel finally got a chance to take revenge of the second round knockout and connected a raw powered left hand which threw Willie on the ring floor.
The 10-round showdown ended and the judges unanimously gave 95-94, 97-92, 97-92 in favour of Willie. After the bout in a short say to the media, the victorious Nelson commented, “It was my fighter’s instinct that got me back to my feet after that knockdown.
But once I got up, I was only hurt for a couple more seconds.”
When asked as to whether he is thinking to move up in the division, Willie stated, “I will definitely be staying at 154 pounds. I felt great in there. I can’t be beat at this weight.” At the same time, Yudal who was dissatisfied by the judgement, stated,
“The referee did a poor job. He gave [Nelson] a lot of time to recover from that knockdown. I thought I did enough to win.”
With this win Willie has collected his career’s 18th win and Yudel, unfortunately, has received his first ever loss.
