Willie Wood wins Pacific Links Hawaii Championship
Willie Wood birdied the final two holes in the final round of the Pacific Links Hawaii Championship and recorded his second Champions Tour victory in the last three tournaments.
Wood started off his final round campaign with a five-stroke deficit against the overnight leader Bill Glasson.
He continued his flawless performance on Sunday and recorded three birdies each on the front nine and back nine of the Kapolei Golf Course.
It was a stunning display of the game by the 51-year-old, as he did not concede a single bogey during the whole week.
His final score at the end of the tournament was a 14-under par 202, one better than Glasson.
Glasson, in the meantime, had a great chance to take the prestigious title home. However, he faltered on the back nine of the course. He suffered five bogeys and handed over the victory to Wood.
"I had a great back nine," Wood said. "I just hung in there and the putts kept continuing to fall, and I got a little bit lucky with the way Bill finished. ... I knew Bill would have to help us out some”.
"I know how Bill feels," Wood added. "We all go through that”.
Last month, Wood rolled in the ball for a long birdie putt on the final hole of the d**k's Sporting Goods Open and forced the game to enter into the playoffs.
Afterwards, he outshined Michael Allen on the first extra hole with an easy par putt and ended the six-year title drought of his career.
"This week feels a little different than the one in New York because I'd won and there wasn't nearly the pressure. I felt much more comfortable and it just fell into place”.
According to the golf commentators, Wood’s consistency in the tournament was the main factor that earned him the second Champions Tour title of his career in one-month period.
Throughout the week, he kept on hitting the fairways and greens in regulation. Despite missing a number of birdie chances, he still managed to avoid birdies because of his green ball-striking technique.
He now looks forward to keep the momentum going into the rest of the season on the 50-and-over tour.
